Franz Gumpert

Franz Gumpert was born on 25 March 1920 in Gnesen. The town of Gnesen is situated between Warsaw and Berlin. Mother Frida died when Franz was 13 years old. Franz had a younger sister Eva Lotte (1924). She later emigrated to Palestine. She died in Israel in 2011. His father -dentist- married for the 2nd time to Betty Heilbronner and they also emigrated to Palestine. Father Paul died in 1953 in Nahariah in Israel, his stepmother Betty in 1963 in Haifa.

Franz was an apprentice cabinetmaker in Frankfurt am Main. There he was a member of the Zionist youth group “Werkleute”. He fled to the Netherlands after Kristallnacht on 9 November 1938. On 23 May 1939 he reported to the Werkdorp. He started working as a furniture maker. After the Werkdorp was evacuated on 20 March 1941, he was taken in by the De Groot foster family on Muiderstraat in Amsterdam.
Franz belonged to the June group, the Werkdorp people who were rounded up during the second major razzia in Amsterdam on 11 June 1941 and deported to Mauthausen via camp Schoorl. There they had to perform forced labour in stone quarries and/or undergo medical experiments. Within two months of his arrival Franz was murdered on 11 August 1941.
